We take the relevant measurements on site, collect mold spore samples for lab analysis and give you a report that explains the results and what needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. Pollutants from cleaning products and building materials, along with moisture, build up when ventilation is poor, and most of them are invisible and odourless.<\/p>\n<h2>When should you have your air tested?<\/h2>\n<p>Some signs to look out for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A musty or chemical smell that lingers<\/li>\n<li>Visible mold or past water damage<\/li>\n<li>Frequent condensation on windows<\/li>\n<li>More dust in the air than usual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People in the building may also notice fatigue, headaches, coughing, itchy eyes or trouble breathing, especially if these symptoms ease once they leave. Testing is also a good idea after renovations, before buying a property, when employees complain about the air at work or when wildfire smoke rolls in. Not every parameter is measured in every assessment.<\/p>\n<table class=\"qt-table\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Parameter<\/th>\n<th>Why it matters<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Mold<\/td>\n<td>Air samples are analyzed in a lab and compared with an outdoor sample. High levels often point to water damage or excess moisture.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/td>\n<td>Shows whether the space is getting enough fresh air.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Temperature and relative humidity<\/td>\n<td>Affect comfort and how easily mold can grow.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Volatile organic compounds (total VOCs)<\/td>\n<td>Released by paint, adhesives, cleaning products and furniture. A common cause of odours and irritation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5)<\/td>\n<td>Fine particles can reach deep into the lungs and make asthma and allergies worse.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>How it works<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Get in touch and tell us what&#8217;s going on. We&#8217;ll figure out which measurements make sense for your situation and send you a quote.<\/li>\n<li>On site, we check the ventilation, look for signs of moisture and identify potential sources of contamination.<\/li>\n<li>We take the agreed-upon measurements and, when needed, collect air samples for mold, including one outdoors for comparison.<\/li>\n<li>Mold samples are sent to specialized, accredited labs and analyzed using the appropriate methods. Results usually come back within 24 to 48 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Your report typically arrives within 3 to 5 business days and covers the results, the likely causes and our recommendations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Preparing for our visit<\/h2>\n<p>To get accurate results, we need to keep outdoor air and everyday activities from skewing the samples. We&#8217;ll send you instructions ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p>Keep exterior doors and windows closed for at least 12 hours before sampling, ideally 24. If you have an air exchanger, turn it off for the same period. Your heating can run as usual. Please also hold off on heavy cleaning, and avoid chemical products, air fresheners, candles and anything that stirs up dust. Depending on the building and the type of analysis, we may give you a few extra instructions. If any of these steps can&#8217;t be followed, we&#8217;ll note it in the report.<\/p>\n<h2>Homes and commercial buildings<\/h2>\n<p>At home, testing is usually about protecting your family&#8217;s health. It&#8217;s also common before buying a property or after renovations.<\/p>\n<p>In offices, stores, schools, daycares and apartment buildings, testing often starts with complaints from occupants. We tailor the number of measurements and samples to the size of the space, how it&#8217;s used and its ventilation system.<\/p>\n<h2>Expert interpretation<\/h2>\n<p>Your results are reviewed by qualified building and indoor air quality professionals, who look at them alongside the building&#8217;s characteristics, its ventilation systems, moisture conditions and potential sources of contamination before recommending what needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t do any decontamination work ourselves, so our assessments and recommendations are independent. If needed, we can also carry out a more detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualitam.ca\/en\/analysis\/mold-inspections\/\">mold inspection<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualitam.ca\/en\/inspection\/thermographic-inspections\/\">thermal imaging inspection<\/a> during the same visit.<\/p>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>How much does air quality testing cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each indoor air quality assessment is quoted individually, because the parameters measured and the number of samples vary from one building to the next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How soon will I get the results?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mold lab results usually come back within 24 to 48 hours. The full report, with our interpretation and recommendations, generally follows within 3 to 5 business days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is this different from a mold inspection?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Air quality testing gives you a broad picture across several parameters. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualitam.ca\/en\/analysis\/mold-inspections\/\">mold inspection<\/a> digs deeper into fungal contamination: we track down the source of moisture, measure moisture levels in building materials and can take surface samples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can&#8217;t I just use a home air quality monitor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It can give you a useful reading of CO2 or humidity, but it&#8217;s no substitute for lab analysis, and it won&#8217;t tell you what&#8217;s causing the problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I show the report to my landlord, employer or insurance company?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes.
